Corruption obsession, caste still a player in India

It is a common notion that poverty in India is due to corruption. No! Corruption is just one in the list others are unemployment, over population..., in a complex social structure that too  a  caste based structure like ours, caste system proves to be a significant cause for poverty. One can confirm this to some extent because poorest of the poor belong to a suppressed class or the dalits.

Corruption obsession.  [What noise of corruption has done]
“The corruption obsession also crowds out the debate on other crucial problems. A country's bankrupt educational system, malfunctioning hospitals or stagnating economy cannot compete with headlines about a corruption scandal. These problems may be aggravated by corruption, but they are created by conditions that often have little to do with the behavior of dishonest government officials. Even when such social ills rise to the top of the national agenda, the fight against corruption tends to inform the public debate. Inevitably, the public's understanding of what it would take to tackle other national priorities becomes clouded by the corruption obsession”
History
Since ages owing to its social structure and strong caste practices that are inherently discriminating in nature have rendered majority of India poor and can be understood from the below quotes of Vivekananda.
[I am quoting Vivekananda so that caste believers should not say I am biased, otherwise you can refer to romila, jadunath sarkar etc who have quoted more intensively from history]

COROLLARY 1_1:
Priest craft has had an impact on India via caste system. What is the kind of impact.

PROOF 1_1
Swami Vivekananda said that one of the cause for the downfall of India has been the negligence of her poor masses for ages.

"I believe in helping the miserable. I consider that the great national sin is the neglect of the masses, and that is one of the causes of our downfall” [Swami Vivekananda]

Pooh! India is to be raised, the poor are to be fed, education is to be spread, and the evil of priest craft is to be removed. No priest craft, no social tyranny!  [Swami Vivekananda]

Priest craft is the one that enforced caste system in India and is directly responsible for this massive discrimination that is never found in any part of the earth. Which can be confirmed from the below quote of vivekananda

"It is in the books written by priests that madnesses like that of caste are to be found, and not in books revealed from God".  [Swami Vivekananda]

 AXIOM 1_1

The Caste System in India  [ Excerpt from a study]
IV.1. Economic State of Untouchables in India
“The caste system that was established in India forced many people who belong to the lower castes into poverty. There are approximately 180 million to 220 million people who are considered to be in the lowest caste in India (Ninian, 2008). These lower castes or ?Dalits? (broken people) are essentially shunned from society (Thekaekara, 2005). It is not that they have earned such isolation, they ?experience absolute exclusion from the cradle to the grave? (Thekaekara, 2005).
Many are forbidden to hold jobs because their caste may be one of an untouchable, or a person with basically no rights. Out of the 180-220 million Dalits, 40 million are essentially doing slave labor because they must work off the debts of their ancestors (Ninian, 2008). These people are taught to expect nothing in life but to work all day in the sun and hope that someone will buy their labor or produce, which is in fact uncommon because those of higher castes often refuse to touch anything an untouchable has touched. This practice is due to the reasoning that people feared that even a simple glance at an untouchable could pollute your standing in a higher caste position and aid in the eventual downgrade of caste in the next life (Standing, 2007). Because of this discrimination and work bondage, it is difficult for many people of a lower caste to have a steady income, therefore keeping them in extreme poverty.”

Corruption has too easily become the universal diagnosis for a nation's ills. If we could only curtail the culture of graft and greed, we are told, many other intractable problems would easily be solved. But although it is true that corruption can be crippling, putting an end to the bribes, kickbacks, and payoffs will not necessarily solve any of the deeper problems that afflict societies.”
So one such deeper problem in India is caste system and its brutal practices enforced and continued even till today.

TRUTH
*) Thus we come to know that caste oppression since ages is the reason for majority India to be in state of poverty.
*) Corruption undoubtedly is also a reason for poverty, so if considered the below parameters
      a) Caste system
      b) unemployment
      c) corruption as chief factors

For a dalit cause of poverty and the degree of parameters affecting are in this order is a > b > c [Here c is almost negligible], Because he is discriminated, he is unemployed or employed in substandard jobs which does not allow him to fulfill his basic  needs and further corruption does not allow him to get funds that he is entitled to, this is again due to caste system )

Corruption is no doubt a problem but its a problem to middleclass,  Today, India's GDP is more than five times what it was in 1991. Its major cities are now home to an affluent professional class that commutes in new cars on freshly paved four-lane highways to jobs that didn't exist. But this affluence is not for Indian majority. Economic liberalization has not even nudged the lives of the country's bottom 200 million people  .

What Noted columnist and an expert in rural issues P Sainath says   [ http://prdti.org/media/p_sainath.html ]
"Only 16 per cent of dalits live in urban areas. The remaining 84 per cent, in rural India. The over 450 SC groups in the country represent an important and incredibly complex phenomenon. A people confronted by seemingly intractable problems brought on by millenia of exploitation, enforced poverty and deprivation."
/*********
Since obtaining independence in 1947, Indian governments have been deeply concerned with widespread poverty and have implemented various anti-poverty schemes. However, rural poverty remains persistent, with the headcount ratio being 30.2 percent in 1999/2000 (Deaton, 2003a). Particularly troubling is the concentration of rural poverty in India in the “scheduled caste” (SC) and “scheduled tribe” (ST) populations.1 The presence of such disparity in the incidence ofpoverty and widespread discrimination against scheduled groups have long histo-ries in India. Affirmative action programs have been at the core of Indian social policy directed toward scheduled groups. Our focus is on rural poverty. Most of India’s poor live in rural areas. Also, we can observe classification of SC, ST and non-scheduled households more clearly in rural areas.
/*********
Poverty tends to be characterized by the denial of rights as well as material insufficiency.

The caste system in India is a traditional drag on society since early times. Some castes seem to suffer from a feeling that all human beings are not equal. This superiority complex among some castes has brought a situation in which the untouchables are the poorest among the poor and suffer as bonded labor, child labor and prostitution.
It was only after independence that the government carried out certain legal reforms to abolish untouchability and to reserve seats in schools and colleges for the scheduled and backward communities. The major part of the benefits has, however, been grabbed by a few privileged Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes. The poorest still remain poor

igher education abroad not because of Reservation but...?

Indian youth pursues higher education abroad not because of
  Reservation but...?

Who would not like to earn in dollars and spend in rupees

If i am able to recollect rightly, R K Narayan explains the adoloscent mind and its passion for higher education abroad in his novel The Bachelor of Arts (1937). Noticiably this is preindependence era. Chandran's(main character) mind contemplates whether to pursue higher education like his friends. He is coaxed by his uncle..so on and so forth. Note that Pre-Independence there was no reservation policy.

This clearly shows that upper middle class always were passionate about studying abroad. Probably one strong reason other than matter of prestige was the lack of access to logistics, infrastructure and faculty in the pre-Independence  era but at the same time we should not forget that speaking English itelf was regarded high among this class.

So this mindset of upper middle class that has remained and percolated is also a reason for studying abroad. So now even Middle class is able to afford because of loan schemes and scholarships Of course another point is recognition. A student feels he is more recognised with a foreign degree. Another reason we should not forget is it would aid him to get a green card, a job with fat pay. I strongly feel earning money is  another reason. Who would not like to earn in dollars and spend in rupees.

At the same time we should agree that even to this day in certain areas access to technology, encouragement and infrastructure is better in foreign countries.

In addition

a) Why does not people who complete BE/B TECH from premier institutes further purse PG in the same
   institute ?

b) For some its a passion, but for some its a fashion. its boring let me spend some time abroad and get a degree at the
  same time.

Percentage of reservation in IITs is very small, the above chart summarizes everything. Percentage of students with reservation background is very less in top universities.

incorrect interpretation of shloka 15.8 ?

HI Friends this is another shloka a pick from Gita whose explanation by ISKCON/Bhaktivedanta is  questionable, they have taken  a excessive pluralistic approach here, already we are suffering from innumerable division among ourselves in the society. To top this  they have differentiated the soul which is still bigger intellectual sin. We find loads and loads of such interpretations which are detrimental to the sum total intellect of society. According to Isconi's, it seems their exits a condition soul and then their exists a liberated soul. No doubt ISKON is introducing layers between God and Man  making their way by forcing us  to condescend to the people in between God and Humanbeing there by looting money in the name of Krishna consciousness and creating a  hierarchy of soul and human beings.

Bhagavad Gita As It Is - Chapter 15 Text 18
yasmat ksaram atito 'ham
aksarad api cottamah
ato 'mi loke vede ca
prathitah purusottamah
yasmat--because; ksaram--to the fallible; atitah--transcendental; aham--I am; aksarat--beyond the infallible; api--also; ca--and; uttamah--the best; atah--therefore; asmi--I am; loke--in the world; vede--in the Vedic literature; ca--and; prathitah--celebrated; purusa-uttamah--as the Supreme Personality.

TRANSLATION
Because I am transcendental, beyond both the fallible and the infallible, and because I am the greatest, I am celebrated both in the world and in the Vedas as that Supreme Person.

PURPORT

No one can surpass the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna--neither the conditioned soul nor the liberated soul. He is therefore the greatest of personalities. Now it is clear here that the living entities and the Supreme Personality of Godhead are individuals. The difference is that the living entities, either in the conditioned state or in the liberated state, cannot surpass in quantity the inconceivable potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is incorrect to think of the Supreme Lord and the living entities as being on the same level or equal in all respects. There is always the question of superiority and inferiority between their personalities. The word uttama is very significant. No one can surpass the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The word loke signifies "in the paurusa agama (the smrti scriptures)." As confirmed in the Nirukti dictionary, lokyate vedartho 'nena: "The purpose of the Vedas is explained by the smrti scriptures."
The Supreme Lord, in His localized aspect of Paramatma, is also described in the Vedas themselves. The following verse appears in the Vedas (Chandogya Upanisad 8.1 2.3): tavad esa samprasado 'mac charirat samutthaya param jyoti-rupam sampadya svena rupenabhinispadyate sa uttamah purusah. "The Supersoul coming out of the body enters the impersonal brahmajyoti; then in His form He remains in His spiritual identity. That Supreme is called the Supreme Personality." This means that the Supreme Personality is exhibiting and diffusing His spiritual effulgence, which is the ultimate illumination. That Supreme Personality also has a localized aspect as Paramatma. By incarnating Himself as the son of Satyavati and Parasara, He explains the Vedic knowledge as Vyasadeva.

Hindutva != Hinduism

Why there exists a sea of gap between the Hindutva definition of RSS and that of Hinduism by Indian saints/ Masters. RSS claims itself to be a Hindu organization and it portrays itself as the savior and preacher of Hindu dharma. But the below quotations in comparison clearly depicts that there is a gap between the Hinduism defined by RSS and preached by Vivekananda, Aurobindo, Paramahamsa, Ramana maharshi. I randomly picked few quotes. Hindu dharma or Sanathana dharma is entirely different from the RSS Hindutva agenda.
What great philosophers and saints like Vivekananda, Aurobindo, Paramahamasa etc  said
What RSS said ?
“If I am sure of anything, it is this humanity, which is common to all …. So it is with the universal religion, which runs through all the various religions of the world in the form of God; it must and does exist through eternity. ‘I am the thread that runs through all these pearls… ‘ (Gita) and each pearl is a religion or even a sect thereof, only the majority of mankind is entirely unconscious of it [ Vivekananda - I]

he Mohammedan conquest of India came as a salvation to the downtrodden, to the poor. That is why one-fifth of our people have become Mohammedans. It was not the sword that did it all. It would be the height of madness to think it was all the work of sword and fire. And one-fifth — one-half — of your Madras people will become Christians if you do not take care. Was there ever a sillier thing before in the world than what I saw in Malabar country? The poor Pariah is not allowed to pass through the same street as the high-caste man, but if he changes his name to a hodge-podge English name, it is all right; or to a Mohammedan name, it is all right. What inference would you draw except that these Malabaris are all lunatics, their homes so many lunatic asylums, and that they are to be treated with derision by every race in India until they mend their manners and know better. Shame upon them that such wicked and diabolical customs are allowed; their own children are allowed to die of starvation, but as soon as they take up some other religion they are well fed. There ought to be no more fight between the castes. [ Vivekananda - II]
“Sangh does not want to blame anybody else for the present degraded state of the society. When the people start blaming others, then there is weakness in them. It is futile to blame the strong for the injustice done to the weak… Sangh does not want to waste its invaluable time in abusing or criticizing others. If we know that large fish eat the smaller ones, it is outright madness to blame the big fish. Law of nature whether good or bad is true all the time [ RSS ]
Swa matha branthi [ My creed/religion is the best ] is the most dangerous [ Bhagawad Geetha]

"If there are errors in other religions, that is none of our business. God, to whom the world belongs, takes care of that." (p. 559) [ Ramakrishna]
'Unfortunately in our country our Constitution has equated the children of the soil with the aggressor, and given equal rights to everybody, just as a person without understanding may give equal rights to his children and to the thieves in his house and distribute the property among all.'[RSS]
"Each religion has helped mankind. Paganism increased in man the light of beauty, the largeness and height of his life, his aim at a many-sided perfection; Christianity gave him some vision of divine love and charity; Buddhism has shown him a noble way to be wiser, gentler, purer, Judaism and Islam how to be religiously faithful in action and zealously devoted to God; Hinduism has opened to him the largest and profoundest spiritual possibilities. " [ Aurobindo]
The foreign races in Hindusthan must either adopt the Hindu culture and language, must learn to respect and hold in reverence Hindu religion, must entertain no idea but those of the glorification of the Hindu race and culture, i.e., of the Hindu nation and must loose their separate existence to merge in the Hindu race, or may stay in the country, wholly subordinated to the Hindu Nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferential treatment — not even citizen's rights. There is, at least, should be, no other course for them to adopt. We are an old nation; let us deal, as old nations ought to and do deal, with the foreign races, who have chosen to live in our country". (Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar's, We or Our Nationhood Defined)...[RSS]
"Religion has no business to formulate social laws and insist on the difference between beings, because its aim and end is to obliterate all such fictions and monstrosities." [ Swami Vivekananda - III]
To keep up the purity of the Race and its culture, Germany shocked the world by her (sic) purging the country of the Semitic Races — the Jews. Race pride at its highest has been manifested here. Germany has also shown how well nigh impossible it is for Races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for us in Hindusthan to learn and profit by. [RSS]

Unfortunately the core values of sanathana dharma as explained to us by likes of Vivekananda namely Tolerance, Equality, and universality are thrown to the wind by RSS. They started their agenda with being guardians of Hindus and wished to establish a Hindu nation in accordance with Shastra’s like Manushastra etc… Their immediate victims were the Non Hindus and the so called untouchables well within the Hindu caste system. Untouchables in general the Non upper caste are also victims of RSS agenda although RSS claims to take all Hindus under one umbrella. The sole reason for this being their strong trust in Manushastra whose pedestal is inequality. Only hardened minds can believe in the principles described in Manushastra. Their cheap attacks in Mangalore that happened recently are also partly due to the text in shastra’s which denied freedom to women and hence any women with a modern outlook are easy prey to such people [ …..to be continued]

I poem and cigarette [ korean poem by Mr O-sang-soon translated to English by lee jo mo ]

i poem and cigarette are
a trinity of the same
with different tones

i and my poetic spirit
are the smoke spewing in volume

riding on the endless curved tune
it thins , seeping into the heart
of the blue sky forever
